The wheel is an Under-shot (High Breast type). Water from the 'mill race' falls from a height above the axle onto the wheel were it is collected in wooden 'buckets'. The buckets fill with water which causes the wheel to turn. There are 36 buckets on the wheel each one consisting of three wooden parts.

Over the years this wood has become rotten and is in need of replacement. This will be a long process but hopefully the wheel will turn once again in the near future.

replacing spokes

The restoration will use Welsh Elm (photo right) to replace the timber on the wheel. First the spokes need replacing (photo above), of which there are 8 each side, then each section of each bucket will be replaced in turn.
